The Real Snow White

This work is auto-portrait. Me acting as the Snow White.  There are twelve men who are accompanying me. I met them on different occasions and in many different places.   I’ve known some of these men all my life. Some of them appeared in my life just for a while, others are still present or they have already left me.  There are twelve of them; It’s a symbolic number and their presence may be perceived in different contexts. I concentrate their attention on myself  because I want them to remember me the same way I remember them. Therefore I put forget-me-nots in princesses’ hands as as a symbol of remembrance.

The Real Snow White

According to the Medieval Germanic superstitions: “the one who carries forget-me-nots shall not be forgotten by his love” If the flowers “are not enough” then all I have is this picture taken by me. Thank to the photographs I keep that moment for myself.  In the book “On Photography” by Susan Sontag we read:  “Taking pictures is an equivalent to appropriate the photographed object.  It is as if entering a sort of relationship which may be associated with cognition that is rather “capturing” or  “Photographs give people imaginary power over unreal past and also they help them to take possession of  space which seems o be a safe place”.

Red lips and shoes symbolise love and suffering. Both feelings often accompany addiction.  Red colour is a symbol of power which I have only here and now. Another important colour is the white of dress, often associated with innocence and impeccability.  It is a symbol of hope and resurrection.  I used my mother’s wedding dress. In my project there is a picture where are flickering pixels which are to point out the state of limbo or the state of dream. These states indicate vitality of the main figure.

The glass coffins bring to mind religious observances such as placing  preserved human bodies of saints on display arranging them as if they were asleep. Allegedly it is said that their bodies exude smell, therefore I decided to emphasise the presence of smell in the Snow White.
